An Open Letter to Manny Pacquiao
May 3, 2015
Dear Mr. Manny Pacquiao,
I neither watched your fight (yesterday), nor did I pray for you to win. All I prayed for regarding your match with Mayweather was your safety. Why? Because, sir, I believe that you should retire from the ring.
Reason #1 The Ring Girls
“And I want women to be modest in their appearance.” 2 Timothy 2: 9
Boxing has no cheerleaders, but it has “ring girls” – ring girls who are dressed in very skimpy outfits.
Sir Manny, do you approve of these women flaunting off their bodies, which thousands upon thousands of “boys” from the audience drool over? (“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.” Job 31:1)
Reason #2 Deaths
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.” John 10:10
How many of your fans have died whilst watching you fight?
As Christians we have the duty not to endanger the life of others. (“‘Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life [pikuach nephesh]. I am Yahweh.” Leviticus 18:5) Still, you encourage young boxers to follow the dangerous path you’ve taken. Have you forgotten about Jonas Garcia, the teen athlete who idolized you and died of internal bleeding after a boxing match? Did it not occur to you that what happened to him could happen to these young boxers?
How many have died from boxing in general? Hundreds. More than hundreds. Please, start thinking of your family. Every time you step into that ring, they are scared – they are tortured, knowing that you’ve consented to the possibility of either you killing, or being killed.
Reason #3 Boxers attitude
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-24
Boxers are trained to be brutal. You cannot be gentle in the ring. You must harm your opponent, or else you’ll be the one beaten black and blue, right?
Reason #4 The Boxer’s Body
“Don’t you realize that all of you together are the sanctuary of God
and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16
Sir, take care of yourself. ‘Nough said.
Reason #5 Gambling
“Greedy people try to get rich quick.” Proverbs 28:22
We’ve all heard that you’ve stopped your engagement with sabongs. But what have you not stopped? Being the panabong itself. In that ring, in a city full of casinos, you have gambled your life for other people to gamble on.
Mr. Manny, these are just five very simple scriptural reasons why you should permanently step out of the ring. I didn’t even delve into any deeper theological studies. The mentioned reasons should be enough.
Understand that you have no responsibility to entertain people or make them happy through boxing (especially in exchange of your life?! your new song said!). If you’re a serious soldier of the Messiah, you’re battling against spiritual forces of the darkness, not flesh and blood. (Ephesians 6:12)
I’ve heard lot of Christians say, including you that the so-called “God” will fight for you in the ring and vise versa. But you lost.
That knockout a couple of years ago already said something— something you dismissed. Why not start listening to what the Heavenly father is really telling you?
I hope you consider my little message.
Blessings to you and your family, sir.
Till He returns,
